4 Self Care Tips
Going through the motions of life is already hard enough, and then adding a global pandemic?! that can really rock your mental health! The increase in depression and anxiety today is heartbreaking. Sadly, mental health isn’t something schools have properly taught us on how to deal with.
Everyone has different coping mechanisms for dealing with their mental health, but being gentle with yourself while you find them is KEY! Coming from the woman who has had multiple breakdowns, I’ve created my own tool set through trial and error. Thankfully these tips mixed in with therapy have helped me overcome those dark, anxious feelings when they occur. Here are some of the tools I use that can hopefully help you!
1. Journaling
Ahh journaling! Getting your thoughts down on paper can really help put them into perspective. Literally the best conversations are the ones you have with yourself. Your opinion matters! I still battle with these thoughts sometimes! I want my therapist and friends to give me answers, but in reality you have to tune into that GUT FEEL! Journaling helps you let it all out and keeps track of your progress. It’s always nice to look back and see how far you’ve progressed on situations.
(TIP) Write down what makes you happy or stuff you enjoy! Sounds cheesy, but I always go to that list when I need a pick me up.
2. Space
This is a BIG one! Creating a safe space for yourself is really important. It can provide a place where you can get a break from judgement, negativity and can help you relax. A safe space can literally be your room, garden, anywhere as long as you feel safe. The key word here is SAFE when it comes to your space!
3. Aromatherapy
Let me tell you — I didn’t get into a candle business just for fun; I love scents! Have you noticed when you walk into a spa it just smells like you want to put your feet up and get a massage! Well certain aromas can really alter your mood. After you clean your house lighting up a fresh candle really hits different. Scents trigger our limbic system which controls our memory and emotion. Hence to why when you smell certain scents it can vividly bring you back to a memory.
4. Exercise
I know this one doesn’t sound as fun and you’ve probably heard it hundred times! but yes exercising helps. One thing I’ve learned about exercising is finding workouts that you actually enjoy. If you hate running on the treadmill, don’t do it! find a different cardio exercise. For example, the pandemic has showed me that I LOVE running at the park instead. Getting out and getting your blood flowing helps improve your depression and anxiety, and you’ll feel better after.
Overall, the main purpose is to check in with yourself, and find stuff that makes you happy. You’re so important and taking care of your needs do not make you selfish. The people who truly love you will always be rooting for your self-growth!
